It is not uncommon to hear that some people say evolution is controversial and it is still a theory! I have seen that even in educated people, probably not well-educated!
Evolution is like gravity or the fact that earth is round not flat!

a scientific theory has a diffrent meaning than the every day usage of the word witch is just a guess.
it means a set statements or principles that are used to explain a fact or phenomenon.
regardless, many scientists question some alleged facts of evolution.
I do not know any scientist who disputes evolution except some creationists! Probably you have seen Ben Stein's movie "expelled" What they talk about is not science! it is "pseudoscience"! evidence for evolution is overwhelming! the controversy you are talking about belongs to 160 years ago when Darwin proposed his brilliant ideas. Now those questions are answered!
You seem to have had a bad conversation with a creationist lately. Remember that it is impossible to convince the faith-over-facts people that they are wrong. Have you watched the debate between Bill O'Reilly and Richard Dawkins? When Dawkins says we are working on the remaining mysteries of evolution Bill says so it's a leap of faith to believe in evolution! Leap of faith! As if Genesis is total evidence...
